Crocheted Hat

Try to ignore the insanely cute baby and check out the hat I made for her this winter.  If you don't know how to crochet, it's a great way to fit in with the elderly.  And to make cool things.  Like this hat.  And it was easy!

I learned how to triple stitch from a friend, but there are also great places to learn online.
Here's how I did it - hopefully I can add some step-by-step pictures later.

I used a H crochet hook for this hat.

1. Loosely single stitch the circumference of the head.  Allow at least an inch or two for stretching so the hat can fit snugly but not tightly around the head.

2. Instead of finishing the row, continue with a triple stitch back at the beginning of the row of single stitches once the circumference is completed.  Measure on head every few rows to make sure you're not making it too long.

3. Once you've reached the crown of the head, then skip every 4th stitch to allow the circumference of the hat to become smaller and smaller.  Once you have 3-4 rows of that completed, skip every 3rd stitch or every 2nd stitch until hat comes together on the top.  This part is a little tricky, so don't be disappointed if you have to undo a few rows to get it fit right to the head.

4. Once you are finished you can knot off the yarn and tuck it.

5. The fun part is decorating the hat!! There are several crochet flower patterns here and here.  The possibilities are endless!!
